Getting There Gerry Boylan Books
Getting There is a rich and well rounded narrative, rife with observation, insight, humor, poignancy, tragedy, amusing vignettes, compelling characters and mystery. All unfolding during a captivating sequence of events, told in parallel stories by the young "Luke" in 1973, and the mature "Luke", in 2003, entwined through hitchhiking. From the perspective of being a "child of the times", it's contemplative analysis of misspent youth is cathartic, and is an aspect that will touch many from "our generation", although any generation will relate. As well, it is a penetrating study into the insecurities, woes, wonders and joys of companionship, family, marriage and parenting. It is an alluring witty entertaining tale of life, love and hope, that I highly recommend. A most enjoyable peruse!Product details

Getting There Gerry Boylan Books Reviews
GETTING THERE by Gerry Boylan showcases two journeys that take place years apart, but each one takes those traveling through it into uncertain situations. For the main character Luke Moore, he is confronted with the fact that you can't outrun your problems and the things from your past you have to deal with them and move on, using the experiences to make your life better. As he prepares to take his daughter off to begin a new chapter in her life, Luke is reminded of his own travels---both literal and figurative---that have gotten him to where he is today.
It is only by reflecting on the lessons learned and applying them that he is able to look at the future and his own past actions with real perspective.
Kudos to the author for taking us to a place that all of us are familiar with while reminding us that sometimes the hardest part is not getting there but what you do at the end of the road.
I was instantly captivated by this novel. It was amusing and moving with its variety of colorful characters, witty banter, promiscuity and diverse perspective of familiar locations. The author maintains a balance of adventure, suspense, amusement and romance throughout all melded together with gut splitting humor. I hope this is only the beginning of his works.
This compelling saga by first time author Gerry Boylan, is a combination road and historical family/sociological saga. Hitch-hiking, a long lost art, is the common thread in this fascinating look at a time in our not to distant past, when a young man or woman took to the road to find him or herself.
Jumping back and forth between the present and the past, stories intertwine and connect to a satisfying and redemptive conclusion. I judge a book by how long the characters or theme stay with me after I have read it. The characters and their stories are still making me smile days later.
For those of us who lived through this time and those who are starting on their own journeys - highly recommended.
For Luke Moore, hitchhiking starts out as a grand lark, another adventuresome chance that might land just about anywhere. A broken family and horrific tragedy in the very beginning of this adventure throws Luke into two states, one bordering on a frantic need to escape the pain of reality and the other a shadowed miniscule voice telling him to honor the promise he made to a fellow wayfarer now gone.
But that tale is preceded by the older, settled down Luke in his later years who is taking his daughter to college and picks up a hitchhiker. How can he tell his tale to this younger wanderer without glorifying the life and at the same time recommending a lifestyle that could threaten his treasured daughter's life now she is no longer to be under the guidance and protection of her doting father and mother. So the tale begins.
In spite of being named after one of the four New Testament gospel authors, Luke develops a hunger for thrills, a "no-risk meter" way of moving through his world. Off he goes, thrilling to the beat of 1970s music, preached at by some well-intentioned nuns, a "one true love" experience, a drug event that made heaven and earth become one, and so much more. Luke manages to cross many states and meets a collection of characters one expects, with even wilder stories than his own to tell.
Redemption comes in many forms. Luke is fortunate enough to find a lady who is steady, loving, and thrilling, a woman just similar and different enough to guide him through the end of his "lost soul" phase. Their turn to redeem friends and a long-lost father ends this novel on a realistic and moving note sure to touch the hearts of all readers.
In the present, Luke Moore and his wife are driving their daughter to college for the first time. Along the way, they pick up a hitchhiker, and this reminds Luke of his youth some thirty years earlier. The story moves between past and present as Luke remembers both the events that turned his life upside down and his restless response as he struggled to find himself.
I was always searching for, and generally empty of, satisfaction.'
Hitchhiking between Florida and Michigan, Luke learned about himself, about the good and the bad in life more generally, and met some very interesting people each of who play some part in making him the man he becomes.
Driving his daughter to college, Luke reflects on the past and wonders how to prepare his daughter for the future. He is also just a little wary of the hitchhiker something just isn't quite right.
Mr Boylan is an accomplished story teller, and I enjoyed his depiction of Luke's journeys both past and present. Luke meets some fascinating characters in his journey, and while he makes some questionable choices, he learns how to thrive in a world that has not always been kind to him and those he cares for. While both the journey and the destination matter in this novel, I found myself far more interested in the journey. There are a number of different messages in this novel for those who care to search for them but it is first and foremost an enjoyable read.
`Sometimes it is the little decisions that make all of the difference.'
